History of 'Paton House'

This 1884 structure was built for Samuel Herrick Sands by Evans and Jolly. Samuel was a lace and hosiery manufacturer as well as a director of National Telephone Company and Nottingham Patent Brick Company and  also chairman of Nottingham  Joint Stock Bank and Nottingham Suburban Railway Company.
This brick building 'West Hill House' has a large canopy over the main entrance and Baroque style interior.

Herbert D Snook acquired the house in 1904 and named it 'The Cedars'. He was a director of his family clothing firm, J Snook and Company. During his 40 years of resident, the cottage style lodge house at Derby road was occupied by his chauffeurs. His widow later sold it to 'Paton Congregational College'.

It was named 'Paton House' in honor of J B Paton, founder of the theological college, 'Paton Congregational College'. The college was moved to Manchester in 1968 and the building was taken over by University's Department of Architecture which is now 'Department of Architecture and Built Environment'.

Places around University: Wollaton Hall

The spectacular Elizabethan mansion, 'Wollaton Hall', was built on a natural hill in Nottingham during the 16th century. This residential building is famous for it's historic 'Hall' and is surrounded by 500 acres of parkland. Except this it also houses the Natural History Museum and Nottingham Industrial museum.

There also is a massive collection of VINTAGE machinery in the Industrial Museum including working steam engines, ploughing machines, telephone exchange and even bicycles and motor-cycles. So that is the target now. I also came to know that, Nottingham has a very rich industrial heritage. Once upon a time it was famous for LACE making and having an importance in textile industry.

Survey on 'Blog habit and Forum'

Before starting this Blog and Forum as my ARM project, a small survey was conducted with in our school. And about 3/4 of our students think that we need an online discussion forum for our school and a Blog is also not at all a bad idea.Though 2/3 of our students will prefer to give their input in the blog but it is strange that only 1/4 of the total strength want to be regular their. And it was astonishing that HALF of the students don't know the existence of our 'exhibit!' website as well as they are also not aware of what is happening in the school.

It is understandable that there is a massive work pressure on each and every student and most of the time is spent in the studio and with our group mates. And I believe, as we spend most of the time in front of our computer, so it might not be an herculean task to follow/update things around you once or twice a week, might be every Friday. And even updates about the events. It will definitely help many people to be updated as well to know each other. This might be an informal virtual platform to share.

If we can get hooked to FB all the time, why not few minutes to our own FORUM!!!

The Heart - 'Lenton Firs Building'

Photobucket

Photobucket

This is the heart of our School, the main adminstration block with school office, faculty rooms, meeting halls and the postgraduate studios, the upper and lower gallery.

And it is one of the oldest structure in our campus.

Lenton Firs Building:

Upon reaching Beeston Lane turn right passing the exposed stone out crop on the left with the gazebo on top. This is the rediscovered Victorian rock garden, part of the Lenton Firs estate. The uncovered pathways can be appreciated in passing, after crossing Beeston Lane and climbing the grassy rise.

This approach is over the former grazing land of the estate, and where the land levels out, this is the area of formal garden, which was once separated from the grazing park by a beech hedge with a ‘kissing gate’ in the centre. The gardens here had terraces and trellises, balustrades and steps, classical statues, an aviary, a dovecote, large glasshouses and a summerhouse (later destroyed by fire). It is thought that many of the structures in the newly found rock garden are formed from Pulhamite stone, a Victorian composite material. Long - term research and reconstruction work is presently being carried out here.

It was Thomas Wright Watson, a Nottingham hosiery manufacturer who had the original Georgian Villa built in 1800. By the mid 19th century Thomas Adams was resident here, a well respected lace merchant of Stoney Street Nottingham. He was regarded as an outstanding employer with great concern for the health and well being of his employees, even providing a chapel within the beautiful warehouse. This T.C.Hine designed building on Stoney Street, is now the main reception of New College Nottingham.

In 1861 Adams supervised the extension and modernization of the Lenton Firs residence, which resulted in the red brick and timber facade that we now see. Most rooms are large and some enhanced by bay windows. There was a Library, drawing room, dining room, and billiard room of note. Once more, when looking out from the front of the house, a scape of fields and woodland could be appreciated together with a view of Nottingham Castle and Lenton village.

Following the stone path right around the side of the house, the original Georgian mansion becomes evident at the rear, and walking on, the 1860’s stable block and added coach house can be seen surmounted with a clock tower and weather vane. There are obvious 20
th century extensions and alterations here which spoil the original appearance, so, a little imagination has to be exercised to see the carriages or vintage cars at a later date, swinging in off Derby Road and in under the clock tower.

The red brick gate lodge to the property with the prominent date of 1861 is known to have been designed by T.C.Hine and housed the gardener and his large family for many years. This property is located on the edge of Derby Road near to the north entrance of the University.

Thomas Shipstone, local brewer, became the early 20th century resident and left a legacy of stained glass to adorn the then billiard room. During his residency, Shipstone acquired Lenton Hall working farm and land, including the Lenton Hall lodge on Derby Road, clearly named as belonging to Lenton Firs from 1920 onwards. As the path from the rear of Lenton Firs is taken going back toward the end of Lenton Hall drive, this early 19th century lodge can be observed adjacent to the road.

Architects are Innovative

Snow has many attractions, effets and side-effects...

The beauty of nature, all coated with white are it's attractions, snow-man, snow fight etc. are the effects and after effects, while swealen bums and hands or legs (do remember those falls :P), caught with cold are the side effects.....

Anyways, we were talking about the innovative ideas of Architects. Lets talk about Snow-man. Otherthan a big Snow man, we discovered a 'snow elephant' and even a 'snow stone henge' in our school courtyard...

The 'Fat Boy'...

The 'Elephant'

The 'Snow Stone Henge'...

The 'SNOWY' Affair

It's snowing heavily here in the United Kingdom Midlands and Nottingham is also not escaped..... This time it is snowing here quite early and heavily, even the bad weather is giving a tough time to the people who are living here since last 20 years....

And our whole campus has turned white, except few tar strips and it is a completely different experience for most of the International students. Though they are struggling to resist the weather but you can bet they are having a great time and lovely experience.

At our School courtyard...

Different Buildings/Blocks in our School

Photobucket
High resolution image HERE.

There is a combination of traditional and contemporary architecture in our campus. Traditional British style architecture can be seen in buildings like 'Lenton Firs' and 'Paton House'. There also modern environment friendly structures like SRB (Sustainable Research Building) and EEC (The Studios). And also a some research dwellings as 'Eco House'.

Where 'WE' are!!!

We have got a mini lush green own campus as a part of the picturesque University park campus. Let me tell you, University of Nottingham has 3 campuses in total in Nottingham other than overseas campuses at China and Malaysia. And they are University Park, Jubille Campus and Sutton Bunnington.

We are at the North part of the University and close to North Entrance.

History of our school

The Nottingham Government School of Design was opened in 1843. Its earliest pupils included “architects’ clerks”, and subjects taught included “draughtsmanship” and “architectural ornament”. A separate department of architecture was formed in 1865 together with departments of painting, sculpture and design. The department grew steadily and in 1928 became the School of Architecture within the then Nottingham College of Art. Meanwhile, The University College of Nottingham had opened in 1881. In 1948, the college received a Royal Charter to become The University of Nottingham. The University’s fiftieth anniversary was celebrated during the session 1998-99. The Institute of Architecture, one of four institutes forming the School of the Built Environment, is the modern descendent of the original Nottingham School of Design. Today the School of the Built Environment runs undergraduate and postgraduate courses and conducts research into architectural history, theory, structures, environmental engineering, building technology and urban design.

The campus of The University of Nottingham lies within a mature park of 330 acres within the City of Nottingham and is one of the most beautiful in Britain. Nottingham contains many leisure facilities, including the Royal Concert Hall and the Nottingham Playhouse, theatres, cinemas and a wide range of sporting venues: Trent Bridge Cricket Ground, Nottingham Forest football club. The National Watersports Centre and Ice Arena are within easy reach of the University. There are twelve halls of residence on the campus and a complex of self-catering flats, a short distance away, accommodating approximately 6000 students. Students in their second and later years may continue to live on campus, although many prefer to make their own arrangements in either private or University related accommodation nearby. As a result of this policy, student activities on campus are thriving. The School of the Built Environment, is comprised of four institutes, Architecture, Building Technology, Urban Planning and the recently established Institute of Sustainable Energy and Technology (ISET). These are housed in a group of buildings, set within a mature garden; two large houses, Lenton Firs and Paton House contain staff offices and seminar rooms, with studios, laboratories, lecture rooms and workshops all accommodated in adjacent buildings. In 2003, the School opened the new Sustainable Research Building that is the Centre for Sustainable Research Technology and accommodates laboratories, offices and exhibition areas. In 2004, the Environmental Education Centre was opened providing new studios for Architectural Design.

The School is situated within a few minutes walk of the halls of residence, the students’ union, and other teaching buildings. All students in architecture and other project-based courses utilise studio workspace. The Marmont Centre has an attractive coffee-bar run by the University central catering. Workshops are available to students for model making, joinery, metalwork and electronics and are supervised by experienced technicians. Photographic studios and darkrooms provide professional equipment for the use of students with advice and instruction in digital and traditional imaging techniques. The workshop and laboratories of the Institute of Building Technology include a small wind tunnel and an extensive range of acoustics, lighting and thermal measuring instruments, used both in research and in project design work. Computing suites providing a range of workstations, printers and plotters for computer-aided design, word processing and data analysis are available to students. The School is linked to the Internet and the University’s Intranet and students are provided with their own e-mail address. The University Library is close to the School and contains a specialist architectural collection of books, periodicals and theses.

University of Nottingham

The University of Nottingham is a prestigious teaching and research university based in Nottingham, East Midlands, and with campuses in Malaysia and China. It is a member of the Russell Group and also of Universitas 21 (which is an international network or research universities). Nottingham University is consistently ranked as one of the top ten universities in the country over the past 15 years in national and international league tables, and is a member of the Sutton Trust 13 list of 'elite' Universities.
In 2005 there were just over 32,000 students registered at the university, with about 4000 international students from over 100 countries. Entry into Nottingham is extremely competitive with approximately 10 applicants for every place, and with applicants averaging over AAA at A-Level with an entry tariff well worth of 400 points. Nottingham has experienced a rapid and successful climb up the pecking order of higher education according to the influential Times Good University Guide, in less than twenty years 'it went from being a solid civic university to a prime alternative to oxbridge.' It has mirrored this success at home with a rapid rise in international rankings, firmly establishing itself amongst the top 75 universities in the world. The University is also 'one of the most employer friendly universities in the world' (Virgin Alternative Guide to British Universities) being ranked amongst the top 20 most targeted universities in the world by leading employers in the THES world rankings, and in a recent Times High Fliers survey being named in the top 3 most targeted British universities by leading graduate recruiters
The University's Students' Union has more than 150 student societies associated with it and another 72 clubs which are associated with the Athletic Union. The University takes part every year in the ‘Varsity series’, which are sporting events between the students and staff of both the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University. There is a student magazine ‘Impact’ which is published during term time. There is also a theatre at the University (the only student run theatre in England). There is a radio station for the University, which has won about 1/3 of all the awards from BBC Radio 1 for student radio channels.

HISTORY:
The University's history goes back as far as 1798, when it was an adult education school. The building of the original University College on Shakespeare Street (in the city centre) was started in 1877, and was formally opened in 1881, as a college of the University of London. It then moved to the campus that is now University Park in 1928, the land for which was donated by Jesse Boot. The college received a royal charter in 1948 which gave it the power to award its own degrees (rather than via the University of London) and hence it became a university in its own right. In 1947 the University merged with the Midlands Agricultural and Dairy College to form the Sutton Bonington campus. In 1999 Jubilee campus was formed on the site of the old Raleigh factory. The University of Nottingham was one of the first UK Universities to expand into Asia, constructing campuses in both China and Malaysia. Expansion has also taken place on a domestic level; the King’s Meadow Campus was opened in 2005 and the new Veterinary School was opened in 2006.
